I need some wisdom...I have a 1989 Sea Ray 18' bowrider with a 175hp 4.3L Alpha set up. I bought the boat knowing it had been flooded (totally rotted) anyway, I replaced all the stringers, transom, floor and just about everything else it was a really fun project and the boat has served my family well for the last couple years untill...it left me stranded the other day (thank goodness for Boat USA membership).
So heres the issue... before I used the boat I checked everything the day before we made the trip to the lake, I hooked the hose and tried to fire it up and nothing. The ignition was checked and has power, the yellow/red wire to the slave solinoide (I cant spell...) was getting power but nothing. I traced started checking everything and found no shorts it compromised wiring, all grounds were good all conections were nice and clean. I removed the main plug off the top of the motor and it was good connected again and everything was good. After waiting a while the boat fired up over and over. Spent two day on the lake and everything was fine. In the 3rd day we were about 20 miles from the landing in moderate chop going just fine and everything went dead (not a good feeling for my two little boys) pulled the cover and started checking everything with the test light. The circut breaker had power on one side, trim was still working. pushed the circut breaker and it snapped again and again so I called for a tow. Today I went through the wiring diagram and everything is good but the breaker would still pop. I pulled the starter and took it apart, it didnt look good at all bad rust inside the starter. My question is this: Would a faulty starter solinoid cause the breaker to trip? Im pretty mechanical (because I'm poor) so I trust my ability but am at a loss here... any advice would be helpful. I have a new starter coming tomorrow just want to know if its a possibility this is causing my problem. Thanks...
