I bought an older (83) mariner 5hp motor and it seemed to work fine except 2 times running full out it slipped out of gear. The other day I went out and it would not go in gear. I moved the lever back and forth several times and then it engaged. Then it became harder to engage and now won't go in forward or reverse atr all. the handle moves and the lower bar from the bottom, the one that moves the locking hook bar moves up and down, as well as the (magnets?) on the motor that won't let you pull the cable in gear are moving fine.

Can anyone offer some suggestions? Also how much would you estimate it to cost to fix?

Thank you the boat is my life,

Steve
zon_d@hotmail.com

Same here!
I have a Mariner 5hp -90 that went just fine last season but now I can't get it into gear. The lever is very hard to move and I believe it would break if I pull any harder.

What should I do?

Howdy, guys. I'm not expert or experienced with your Mariners, but it sounds to me like you have both lost control of the dog clutch that moves in the lower end to engage the gears. That suggests that something has come loose in the gear case. . . .a pin or shaft. . . . or in the linkage to the lower end. These mechanisms are pretty simple once you get to them and if you have any mechanical experience I would tear into them. They shouldn't be difficult or expensive to fix.

Good luck.
JB
