5.7L Volvo Penta - 2001 - EFI- stalled

My engine died with no hesitation or warning. Only 280 hrs and its in great shape. Was cruising at 3000 rpm and it stopped like you turned it off. It would not restart. All the regulars were OK: fuel, battery, teather switch was connected

Has anyone had this happen?

Any suggestions what to try?

Thanks for the help

Do you have spark?
Do both fuel pumps run for 2 seconds when you turn the key on?
Have you checked the fuel filter for water?

Typically a hard/quick shut off is ignition. But could be a million things. Need to start troubling shooting it and gather more info.

Also, someone told me it could be the coil? could that cuase a hard stall? how could you test for that?

With EFI, it could be a lot of things, including the coil. But don't start assuming because someone else had a part fail on their engine that you have the same problem.
The OEM service manuals have all the test procedures in them. If you post your engine SN or full model number, I probably have links to them. But the first thing you have to do is figure out if you have spark and if you have fuel pumps that run.

Would water in the fuel cause a sudden shot-off-- seems to me that would be a slow stall and spurt kind of thing?

When I pull the fuel filter-- how can you know if you have water? what are the signs?

thanks

When you remove the filter, just empty the filter into a clear container. You will see the seperation with water on the bottom.

It could, depending on how much water, and what type Fuel injection.
That's why I wanted to know what model & SN you had.
Year means nothing more than the year of your boat, has nothing to do with engine. It could be older or newer and have completely different systems.

You have a 2000 model engine with TBI type fuel injection.
You should also check the fuses inside the box mounted on the starboard exhaust riser.
