First a little background: 1996 Chaparral. The engine is a Mercruiser 5.7 Carb(2bb) and runs great! When I took the boat to get winterized the shop told me the fuel pump was not attached to the block, it's hanging from the fuel line, and an automotive fuel pump. Not being much into blowing myself or my friends up I decided to "make it right"...
Now here's where it gets weird. The SN on the engine states this engine should have a mechanical fuel pump. The current pump is electric and wired to the choke on the carburetor. The location on the block where the pump should be attached does not have a hole for the pushrod for the mechanical pump. I have not found any version of this engine that offered an electric pump. Now I'm thinking this engine is not original and most likely a 1998ish.
The 1998 version of the electric fuel pump is bolted to a ridiculously expensive ($120+) bracket along with the fuel filter. From what I have gathered, the bracket does not bolt to the block where the mechanical fuel pump would have.
So where do I stick it? I would like to know before I order parts that don't fit.
