5.7L Mercruiser surging

I just got my boat (22' Regal Valanti 220, Mercruiser 5.7L, Alpha One) out on the water for the first time this season today. Things started out great, then after a while I started having a problem, and I was hoping someone might be able to help me out.

When I was at a higher throttle setting (3500-4000 rpm), the motor would start to lose power intermitently and drop RPM by 200-300 rpm. If I backed down a little, it would stabilize. Pushing the throttle up again would cause the motor to hesitate - WOT would result in rpms bouncing between 4200 and 2500 rpm. As time went on, the condition became a little more pronounced, eventually leading me to go back to the launch at 2000 rpm because the surging would start at anything over 2500. Stopping and letting it cool off didn't seem to have any effect. Starts up quick, idles smooth. Runs OK in neutral, just not under load.

Any ideas what would cause this? All gauges look good, oil is full and clean. New water separating fuel filter installed end of last season, gas has Stabil added during winterization.

Thanks!

Re: 5.7L Mercruiser surging

Sounds like it is still demanding more fuel than is being supplied....
I would check the filter screen on the carb itself.....
You have a restriction somewhere .....
Whether it is a partially clogged pickup screen, fuel vent, anti siphon valve, is anyone's guess....
Check the aforementioned screen....
If that is good, I would try using a separate portable fuel tank, hooked up to the fuel /water separater, 6 gal or so & see if the condition goes away.....
2-3 minutes under load should tell you which direction to look....
Towards the engine, or back to the tank & fittings....
Hope this helps....:).....
I would empty out the fuel separater first & see what is in it.....

Thanks for the tips. I'll check that out this week and hopefully get her back on the water next weekend for another try!

Haut Medoc,

Just wanted to say thanks for the help. Changed out the carb fuel filter and sure enough it was clogged with stuff. Put the new one in and she runs great.

Just out of curiosity, what is the typical time between changes for that filter? Every year?
