5.7L Mercruiser overheating problem??

So I posted this before, did some work on it, went on vacation, started back up on it... thus I'm starting a new thread. It's a 96 5.7L raw water cooled Mercruiser used almost exclusively in salt water.

The original problem/symptom was the manifold/riser on one side got hotter then the other. At idle on the hose using a non-contact thermometer one side gets to 125, the other hits 85. At cruise speed in the salt water the hot side gets in the 130's while the cooler side stays about 90. While running full throttle for a bit it got up to 180s and 150s.

Hitting the block with the thermo it's about 130, so not bad. I think the temp gauge doesn't work because the gauge starts at 100 deg and rarely moves.

What I've done:
I pulled the heat risers and looked into the manifolds and neither the risers or manifolds are too bad. Had a mechanic check them too and he said no problem. The paint is flaking off the risers, not sure if it's from heat, age, or salt?

I checked the flapper valve beyond the elbow and they open easily on both sides.

I pulled the hose off the t-stat housing and blew into each side and both blew though pretty easy.

I pulled the t-stat housing and it was a mess in there, but seemed just as bad on each side. I had to crumble the insert to get the t-stat out, the t-stat is a rust colored mess and i'm hoping it still worked! The gasket is going to be fun to get off the block, and it seems as if that insert had burnt as it is almost like a black char in the housing where it was?

So I'll probably have someone check the housing, but I think it's toast and will just replace it. However, I can't see how that would cause the difference on the two sides. Or is the difference between the two sides normal? or is there anything else to check?

And does anyone have advice to get off a mess of a t-stat gasket?

Sorry for the very long post...

Over heating problem?

You said you were checking temp at the manifolds but is the engine temp going past 200 on the gage? Is the alarm going off?

If you touch any engine's exhaust manifolds after or during loaded operating conditions, they will feel hot.

You will need to clean up the thermostat housing, try using a gasket scraper and a whole bunch of elbow grease.

Just don't run it with out the thermostat. If it is bad and you still want to test, cut the middle out of it and use the restricter plate.

You can pound out gaskets from an old shoe box using a ball peen. Get the thermostat housing good and clean before assembly.

I remember your last post you are on the right track right now getting a new T/housing as that can go bad at times and just to be as safe as you can by doing that. And yes one side does run hotter then the other by as much as 30-40 degrees can be normal. ??? Dose you engine have a tube that goes from the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold that gets varry hot??? Also install the new T/housing gasket dry so your sensors will work right that is mounted to the housing.;):)

Thanks. I'm not sure the gauge is working? It starts at 100 degrees and the needle rarely even moves. I do all my boating in the Puget Sound where the water is in the 40's, but I'd still think the gauge should read above 100. Never heard an alarm.

There are two sensors in the t-stat housing. Is one for the gauge and one for the alarm?

I talked to a lot of people about this and no one knows for sure if it's okay or normal for one side to be this much warmer then the other? That is my big concern. That and had I been overheating and not know it.

YES,
And yes the gauge should sill go up to a round the temp of what your thermostst is.

I know for sure this is normal I have been checking and feeling them for 17 years and thay are always different temps and they run a round the temps you are reading with your temp gun. you are fine. Put a new thermostat and housing in and you will be better off.

I'm not an expert by any stretch but I've been dealing with a problematic thermostat housing. Both Design 1 and 2 have these check balls and a tension rod in the T fitting that goes to the top of the risers. I've found a couple websites saying that can be the problem with over heating or weird temp readings. Let me know if you find any NOS Design 2 thermostat housings. Retro fitting a 1 is a pain
