Is there any horsepower difference between a 1997 and 1998 5.7L carbed alpha1? Some have told me that the hp was increased in 1998. What is the hp of these engines? Thank you.

Re: 5.7L HP

I have an 1989 5.7 and it is rated at 260h.p. Not sure if they boosted the power in them at that time. I believe at this point they are getting 300 h.p out of the 5.7.

a 5.7 2bbl with flat tappets in 97 is 210 h.p. a 5.7 2bbl with roller lifters in 98 is 250 h.p.

Re: 5.7L HP

Johnkc - Thanks. The numbers on the hp is what I had heard, but some said that the 97 reading was at the prop and the 98 was at the engine. What you are telling me is that there actually is a 40 hp difference between the 97 and 98. Am I following? The boat in question is a crownline 202. Thanks Ted

Re: 5.7L HP

in 96-97 merc needed an engine to fill the 200 v-8(approx) hp slot since there wasn't a 5.0 available from gm those years.this is the first time a 5.7 was offered with a 2 bbl.then in 98 when gen+ as merc calls it and vortec as gm calls it ,came out .and these have 2bbl carbs or efi,no more 4 bbls. all of these engines are rated at the prop.and the 210h.p. is sufficient in the 202 crownline 48 mph with full fuel and 2 adults.250 may get you a lil over 50 mph but not a solid 55 mph.
