I have a '89 5.7 Merc that came with the boat coupled to a Alpha 1 Gen 1. The oil takes on a bit of water, can't locate it.

Question is will this engine fit and what do I have to do? (I do not have Chevy's 5.7's around here, so everything has to be right when I order)

1987-95 Chevrolet, GMC C, K, G, R & U (L05)(5.7K)

1. Do I have to change the cams?
2. Will the flywheel fit?

Thanks in advance.

Qystan

You are sure it's not the exhaust manifolds??
If so, that vintage 5.7 should fit. I think your current flywheel will fit, both engines would have 1 piece rear main seals.
A cam change will almost certainly be necessary.

IF you're ordering a New motor,....
I'm Guessing that "1987-95 Chevrolet, GMC C, K, G, R & U (L05)(5.7K)" is a replacement motor for a Truck,.........

IF that's the case,....

I wouldn't even bother to change the Cam,...
A Truck Cam is Sooo Close to a Marine Cam,... You'll Never Know, or Feel the Difference.......

And,.. as Tilliam states,... The Flywheels Will be interchangeable between the 1s you have,... as the Crankshaft bolt pattern IS the Same.......

But,... You Will want to change-out the Coreplugs to Brass,.... The new motors will Probably come with Steel Coreplugs......
Have you tried Pressurizing the Cooling System with Air,.....
You'r Leak will become Quite Evident,.... Just follow the Hissing Sound to the Leak........
BTW,.... 10/15psi is Plenty......

Re: 5.7L Engine Replacement

Great info on the engine! I'll ask if its a truck engine to be sure. Thanks guys.

Its not the manifolds, have removed the risers to look inside exhaust area - its dry, plugs are also dry.

I'll try the pressure test, but its probably the block, just changed both heads a short while back.

Will also try to re-seal the head bolts - just to be sure.

Thanks again.
