Im just finishing up the re-power in my boat from a 4.3 to a 5.7. I have the Edelbrock 1409 carb with the stock jetting that comes with it for the 5.7 non vortec (removed the calibration kit for the 4.3) I did a plug read and they are looking very lean, still white.

Im wondering if anyone on the forum has a similar setup and what their jetting, rods & springs are to get me close?

TIA

Update

Stock 1409 carb settings:
primary jets - 0.98
Secondary jets - 0.101
Rods - 0.68 x 0.47

The local parts store had some jets lying around so I brought them home to try out. They ordered me in the calibration kit as well because they don’t have any rods on hand. I figured I’d try them out for S&G.

I changed them to:
primary jets - 0.101
Secondary jets - 0.107
Rods - 0.68 x 0.47

I did a WOT run and cut the ignition to check plugs. No change, still look white and new, hardly any residue to speak of. The boat did seem to have a lot more get up and go. I’m wondering if Edelbrocks stock calibration for the 5.7 is way off for the vortecs, similar to what rick went through with his 4.3 vortec and the 1485 calibration?

Maybe, though I'm running lean on the stock setup with a 4.3 using the stock settings. You're only running 1 or 2 steps richer.
Tech support at edelbrock today thought I should run .101 jets with .70 x .47 rods.

That interesting, maybe I’ll give them a call tomorrow and see what advice they can give me. I appreciate the reply!

It is strange that we can't find a single calibration for a given motor. All motors roll off the line with the carburetors calibrated the same, why is it different for us in the wild? I can't believe that Edelbrock still has the 1485 calibration kit for the 4.3 on the shelves. Worthless. Because of that, I would distrust their 5.7L kit as well. Try and find a happy spot by charting where I am at with a test run, like you are doing. Their techs are sometimes decent help at least. Their manual is superb as well.

Rick Stephens , that's exactly what is confusing me. However, Michigan motorz does use the stock setup on multiple motors, and they're super helpful and knowledgeable. Might be worth giving them a call. In my case, I'm betting that if they're using the stock setup on the 4.3, then I probably shouldn't have to go more than 1 or 2 steps richer. Also, I asked Edelbrock about the 1485 kit, and they were adamant that it was the right kit for the 4.3, even vortec.

Wow, just looked up the specs. 0.089 jets and .068 x .057 rods? My pistons would have a hole in them if I was able to make it above idle!

The 1485 kit is absolutely too lean. No idea where it came from..... maybe 1980's leaded gasoline? I don't know, but useless for everyone I have ever talked to who tried it.

I called the tech today, they said I should keep my jetting as it is and up the rod from the stock calibration to the 1444 or 1442 rods (0.65 x0.37 or 0.63 x 0.37) but I feel like it still need more fuel on the secondary jets as well. The motor seems sluggish and underperforms for a reman 5.7 vortec imo. I’m going to keep playing with it until I get a nice looking plug and I’ll post back with my results.

I know this was a long time ago, but do you have any updates on the configuration you ended up with?
