I have a 5.7 omc 1987. My engine never heats up and is always under 110 degrees. Could I have a missing thermostat and is that bad ?

pull the thermostat housing and look
Did this and opened up and there was no thermostat, looked like it was in there and someone ripped it out. Or the thermostat broke and exploded, any how, put in a new one and got the motor running up to temp properly. Should I be worried about on 1/4 of the thermostat being there when I first opened up the housing?

As long as the engine didn't overheat, and bits of the old one didn't get into the circulating pump should be OK. You have to use a proper Marine stat, 160* for the OMC and its held in with that rubber ring. An automotive stat will let the engine get way to hot and will rust out in no time because they are only for engines with antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors not raw water cooling.

Do you have a link to the thermostat you put in?
I put a new one in the other day and it must have been defective because it got way too hot so I took it out.

Test in a pot of hot water with a radiator thermometer to make sure it opens at the proper temp (160*F).
