yes it has been run in salt water before I bought it but now fresh water only.p.s I've heard that if you shut it down while its in gear the engine will suck water through the exaust valves but I'm not sure thats true.

It sounds like you have a leaking exhaust mani. on that side. The real question is how much damage has been done. The turning it over with a breaker bar doe's not sound good. Are the plugs out?Have you tried to turn it over with the drive off? Will it turn over with the starter? How much,if any water in the oil?

if the engine hydrolocked u may have damaged the pistons. u can suck water through the engine by shutting it off in gear. is that what happened? if it was run in salt water & not flushed out regularly your probably looking at new manifolds & risers. they only last 5 yrs. or so anyway if run in salt. yours are 10 yrs.old. good luck.
