I have been changing oil by sucking thru dip stick.. Is there a better way?

I felt underneath engine very bottom, a bolt, can the oil be drained from there? If so seems like a huge mess in bilge.

Any advice?
Is it necessary to use mercruiser Oil?

Thanks as always.

Hard to say, what year is your engine?
The 90's and newer have a threaded portion on the dip stick tube and the tube goes to the bottom of the pan. The threads are for a hose fitting. NO need to stick a smaller hose in the dipstick tube.
Do you warm the engine up before changing?

Are you having problems sucking out the oil ?It's been done that way for years.Just be sure to warm the engine first (15 to 20 minutes ).
And have a good pump.

As an after thought, once after sucking out the oil on an engine,I did pull the oil pan drain, and so little oil was left, wasn't worth the effort. These engines (with the threaded dip stick tube) are designed to be drained this way.

Use an oil that meets Merc specs, and don't try to be too cheap.Oil is an engines blood.

DHP

Its 210 horse 5.7 liter 1998.
I do warm up engine. I had heard that when you suck the oil out the dip stick, there are still little metal shavings that remain unlike if I were to drain through oil pan.

I wanted to make sure that the bolt I am feeling as I reach way under engine block is in fact where I could drain out oil.

Well,..........
IF you've got your hand On the Oil Pan,........

Ayuh,..... There's Only 1 bolt in the Bottom of the Base,.........
That's the Drain Plug.........

I've got a Remote Drainline attached to the Oil Pan Drain Hole of My engine.......
I can push it thru the Bilge Drain, when on the trailer,+ Drain/Suck it out that way,.....
Or,....
The Hose is long enough to pull it up beside the engine,+ Suck it out That way when at the Dock........

if you have that many metal shavings in your oil,,, i dont think a change of oil is going to help you.

There always is metal and other composites in the oil, including acids. There should be NO shavings, and probably there aren't any.
Warming up the egine before changing the oil makes it easier to drain,AND suspends any contaminants in the oil,so they drain also.No need to pull bottom drain.

DHP

There sure is a better way.You can install a setup that I had in a past boat of mine at it was the best. You replace the oil pan drain plug with a fitting attached to a hose which goes to an electric pump and you install this pump on the inside of the transom .Another hose comes off the pump and when the pump is running one hose draws the oil from the bottom of the drain pan and the other hose discharges the old oil into a container. It is all done by a push of a button. It takes about 2 minutes to drain every drop of oil. This is the best setup I have ever seen.As long as you have enough room to install the fitting you can do this .And you will need about $100 for the whole set up.It was called "Quick Drainz" I believe.
