Re: 5.7 l omc 800 transom seal is off by 3 inches up and down
gettinther you hit the nail on the head. had a buddy jump in the boat as i lifted the leg the mounts have cavitated into the stringer. well looks like this years boating season has come to an end. anybody have any ideas now to fix this problem.
First let me say sorry to hear that on your behalf, just glad I could point ya to it, only reason I thought of it was because I've had to repair one for myself.
The way I repaired mine, with the boot off either remove the engine assembly or raise it out of the way, kinda depends what equipment you have to work with. Dig , cut , chisel, grind, what ever you have to use to remove the part of the stringer that needs to be replaced , which by the way is all that is rotten,
DO NOT CUT THRU THE OUTER PART OF THE HULLunless you want to repair that too. Clean the hull fibreglass extremely well with acetone , use a course grinder or similar (24 grit sanding disk for me ) to ruff up the hull where the stringer lays then clean again with acetone. Get yourself some hardwood if possible (oak or white ash) cut to fit where the rotted stringer was removed and fit to the remaining stringer, overlapp where possible so you can screw it at the joint between the old and new.Lay some glass mat and resin where the new piece is going including all joints( transom, old to new, and the bottom of the hull) and this must be squeezed together until the fiber glass sets. After this has set for 24 hours continue adding wood as necessary in the same manner fibreglass(mat and resin) and screw where possible to rebuild the rotted stringer back to proper height. Once you are as close as possible cover the entire repair area with fibre glass and resin.
Once the first piece is in and set for 24 hours you can apply fibreglass mat and resin as it cures sufficently untill finished. The stringer repair should be done in layers and overlapped for instance - if you start with 2x4- 8 inches longthe next piece should be 12 inches to overlapp the first putting fibreglass mat and resin between and screw them together to squeeze out the air and make a good bond. If the stringer height is 4 inches high from the hull to the top then 2 pieces will do the job but put about 1/4 in fibreglass mat and resin over the top and cover the complete repair with mat and resin as well.
Do not screw through the hull either
I hope this helps or maybe some of these other guys have a better way but I do know this way works from experience.
All the best and safety first
