Hi, I just recently purchased a 1989 23' Chaparral Bow Rider and it needs the engine rebuilt. It currently has a 5.7 L 270 HP engine but like I said needs to be rebuilt. I have a 1997 Chevy engine (5.7 L 350 HP) that needs rebuilt as well and it is already out of the truck, which leads to my two questions:

1. Will my 5.7 L Chevy Truck engine fit or adapt in this boat?

2. If so, which engine would it be better to rebuild and put back in this boat? Which would have more power? Which would cost more? Would it be a headache to try to adapt the Truck Engine in this boat?

Ayuh,... Other than the vortec heads that should be on the 97,...
They're basically the Same motor...

As in the Long Blocks,+ Not as Complete motors..

What you have there is the PERFECT motor for a boat.

some things to keep in mind.

Automotive head gaskets and water pumps will not hold up to marine duty, UNLESS you install a heat exchanger.

You're options are to swap these to marine parts or install a heat exchanger. Given the benefits of a closed cooling system, I would install the heat exchanger.

Remember that you're starter, alternator, cap, and rotor must also be marine to meet USGC standards.

You will also need a new manifold to adapt you're carb to the vortec heads, and you may have issues with v-belts and serpentine belts, but these can be over come.

The cam in that truck 5.7 is pretty much bang on with the marine cam, so you will no no problems with water revision or lack of bottom end torque.

You will find the non-vortec to vortec upgrade makes a marked improvement in over-all performance.

best of luck.
