What kind of problem would you have if the starboard riser was higher in temp than the port riser.. I can rest my hand on the port riser for a long period of time.. The starboard riser gets hot enough that I can only rest my hand on it for a couple seconds.. Temp gauge at 3200 RPM cruising is 170 degrees. Was the motor overheated and a head gasket damaged?.. Thanks guys.

Nope,... Not Necessarily....

The starboard riser tends to run slightly warmer than the portside on V-motors,.. Generally speaking...

The 1st place to look if you Think you have a Problem, would be the Riser Itself,...
If the exit ports clog up, No Flow, it gets Hot...

Re: 5.7 Gi Volvo Penta possible overheat!!

I thought the same thing but when I get up over 3500 RPM cruising the riser cools down enough that I can put my hand on it.. So I ruled out the possibility of clog up.. Tell me what you think.. The origional problem what that driver of boat was cruising at 3-4000 RPM and heard a loud pop.. Lifted engine hatch and hose had blown off water pump housing.. A friend held the hose on while driver limped back to dock.. What I don't know is how long motor ran without water or at what temp the motor was at.. That is what I have to work with.. I just don't want to cause additional damage by something overlooked.. Thanks

Pulled riser and found no blockage.. Back flushed cooling system and checked thermostat housing. Still running hot on starboard side. Temp gauge still reading 175. Found that exhaust did get hot enough to melt the bellows so that water will trickly from them slowly. Other than that I don't see any other problems.. Should I let it go or keep looking?

The FIRST thing you check on a marine engine overheat is the raw water pump impeller.
Just the words Volvo 5.7Gi means little without a year attached, Even better, a full engine model number, since Volvo doesn't list any engine by year.

I usually stay away from volvo threads, but could have a flapper broke off and blocked off that exhaust tube, maybe halfway ?

2004 5.7 Volvo. I changed impeller out just after the overheat.. Impeller still had all veins attached. No sight of flappers in y-pipe that i can see anyway..

Do you have the problem since you changed the impeller?????? Were the vanes all bent over and wouldn't straighten out? Missing vanes is not the only problem that can happen to an impeller.

May be due to the fact that Volvo doesn't use flappers on that model.

Yes, still have the same problem after the impeller change.. Impeller veins were bent over and looked to be a bit old. Not break off's. Thats why I'm trying to fingure out if the motor got hot enough to do damage when it overheated..

Does this happen in the water or on muffs, or both?
