I just bought a 1990 4 winns with a 5.7 cobra engine and out drive. It came with no info or manuals. The motor runs great but the outdrive wont go down. it runs if I move the switch either way but wont move. I think it could be low on trim oil? how do i check the oil. Where does it go and what type? I ordered a factory manual from ebay but haven't received it yet. Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks

Re: 5.7 cobra help

Right on the front of trim pump is a red plastic threaded plug, remove the plug the level should be at the bottom of the thread, WARNING the drive must be in the up position when you remove the plug and remove it carefully just in case there's any pressure.
It does sound like you could be out of fluid, a stuck valve, or broken pump/motor coupler.

This is from an OMC service manual.

Re: 5.7 cobra help

Thanks for the help that clears it up. The drive is about 2/3 of the way up with no fluid in sight. I'll try some ATF and see if that helps.
