Re: 5.0 yamaha stern drive risers

No aftermarket for Yamaha as of yet. Yamaha just started recasting the exhaust systems last september. We've moved several sets this month already. Even tho they aren't the cheapest risers on the market, still cheaper than changing out the complete system. One Boo-Boo that Yamaha made is not making anymore riser gaskets. I've already gone thru my stock of gaskets so what I've been doing is suppling a do-it-yourself riser gasket kit. I trace several outlines of a riser gasket on some thick gasket material. The customer does the cutting.

Re: 5.0 yamaha stern drive risers

Capt Ken,
How much are the risers and gasket kit? Does it include the elbow? Maybe a better question is how do I check to see if they are bad. When I split my leg apart to repair the shift fork I found a lot of big chunks of metel just laying inside. Plus when I put ears on it it does not suck enough water to keep the engine from overheating. When the boat is in the water and I start it for the first time I have to goose the engine to get the alarm to go off, but after that first time of the day I have no more cooling problems. By the way could you tell me what shearwood pump is in it?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Re: 5.0 yamaha stern drive risers

Risers are $286.63 each, which includes the do-it-yourself gasket kit. That metal you found in the exhaust is the snout that use to be part of the risers. You boat can't be any newer than 95, since that was the last year they were installed in boats. If the risers have been used in salt water and haven't been replaced since new, they are long past time for replacement. The problem you are having with getting water to the pump when flushing is common when you don't use a flush attachment that can deliver enough water. The rev'ing the engine to get the pump primed when first launched is suggested by Yamaha to get the prime going. If the pump hasn't been checked or rebuilt in the past few years, its also past time. You are correct in that it is a Sherwood pump built for Yamaha and are getting rare. They are no longer available from Yamaha but some Sherwood distributors have a few left. I have one new one and one almost new one left.

Capt Ken,

Thanks for the info. First I have to get it to shift then I'll worry about the risers. I'll most likely call when I'm ready to do the risers. I got your number from a earlier post
Thanks again
Steve
