Engine overheated (no audible alarm). Head gasket shows sign of water bypass after overheat. Impellers and water pump show NO sign of ingesting something or damage. Reason for overheat UNKNOWN!

Shop has completely disassembled engine and cannot determine cause of overheat. They are now quoting on cost to rebuild engine.

My concern is what caused it? And what if it happens again after rebuild.

Am I better off buying another engine? 1996 5.0 Volvo with fuel injection.

What are estimates on various options - rebuild - replace - remanufacture - new - etc.

Any and all help appreciated.

Brian Comer
comerbd@gmail.com

Could be a problem in the pickup system for the raw water pump. Any holes in the hoses or fittings or leaks in gaskets will cause air to get into the system instead of water. Was any work on the drive done before the overheat?
There is a tube between the upper and lower sections of the drive that could miss the hole or push the grommet out of the way when putting the drive back together. It would cause an overheat only when on plane because that section of the drive would be up out of the water.

The outdrive was overhauled by an authorized Volve Dealer approx. 3 hours of operation prior ro this overheat. However the boat would have been operated on plane at least an hour or so immediatley following outdrive repair.

I suspected this overheat could have been a result of the prior repair but the shop indicated that is impossible. I have taken to another authorized dealer for the engine work but all thay have done with outdrive is remove it from boat.

What would be best way to proceed?

Well, that eliminates that.
Don't forget about the ever present plastic bag in the water. It's cause more than one overheat and blown engine. They usually let just enough water through to keep from burning up the impeller, but still overheat the engine. Then when you shut the engine off, the bag falls off and you are left scratching your head as to why it overheated.

If it was my boat, I would be looking at a new Volvo long block.

What would a new Volvo long block set me back? What is included in a long block?

If it were a plastic bag (and I did argue that it may have been with the Insurance Company)- how would I prove my point to get the insurance company to cover it? As i understand it, it would have been "collision damage" that caused the overheat if the bag theory could be proved.

There is no way to prove if a plastic bag caused the problem or not. But if everything else checks out ok ........... Did they check the manifolds and risers?

As far as cost goes, check with your dealer. They have all that info.
The Volvo long blocks come with heads, pan, timing cover and flywheel.

Re: 5.0 Volvo Overheat Engine Damage

I had same problem after a repair on drive unit where the shop put the copper pipe and rubber grommet back in wrong poistion. I discovered it since I took it apart. I could run boat for 15 minutes on the limited water it still got but it overheated finally. I burned the back valves in the risers and hopefully that was all. I have run the engine since with no problems.

What do you mean - head gasket show sign of overheat- I have not disassembled mine. I have no leak on outside, oil and plugs look fine.

Shop now claim that back valves have been taken out of stock as they caused more problems than they solved by melting and getting stuck in the exhaust outlet. Can I just leave them out and do no other modification?

I found another topic on the valves. There is a tech bulletin from Volvo reccomending to leave them out. I have a 5.0 -95 in a Glastron 195. I will leave them out unless anyone of you know better.

Thanks for the word

Check the manifolds and risers for restrictions in cooling passages!
