Update on my two year old intermittent warm start issue with my 2003 5.0 MPI. When restarting a warm engine it acts like it is not getting fuel. Will barely run for a few moments then quit. Re fires immediately but dies. I have experienced this 3 times now since 2022. I now carry a fuel pressure gauge in the boat to enable testing while it's not running well. I got a chance to test it this weekend. Problem occurred once the entire weekend but I was ready to troubleshoot with my pressure gauge.

My results are as follows: 1. turning on key, pump runs and stops when pressure appears to comes up but fuel pressure at rail is near zero!! 2. After several attempts it finally restarted but the fuel pressure guage was jumping back and forth between 10 to 30 lbs very rapidly with engine running rough. Then finally it leveled out, pressure came up to 38 lbs steady (where it has always been) and engine ran great for the remainder of the weekend.

So my feeling is the pressure regulator is intermittent but I also question the fuel pump? This is a cool fuel 2 system and to gain access to the pump and regulator is going to be exceptionally difficult. I'm thinking since I will have so much difficulty I may as well replace both at the same time while I'm in there !! Which brings up another question. The price mark up on parts from Mercruiser is profane and I'm thinking about just getting new Sierra brand parts. Fuel pump prices run from around $60 to $800 depending on the brand. Quicksilver is very high and I question if there are not other pumps (possibly made by same manufacturer) that are reliable. It's going to be a difficult job and I don't want to go through this using China rip off cheap parts that are not reliable. Has anyone experienced issues with the Sierra brand??
Any thoughts or experiences with this problem is appreciated
