hey gents ! i just bought my parents 2010 searay 240 sundancer with the 5.0mpi engine. the boat stand still for two years and now i want to make a full servicing to the engine. my previous boat was a volvo penta 3.0 GS /SX drive where i knew anything about and was able to do maintanace and repairs by myself , but i have to say i do not know anything about the mercruiser MPI.

i today first time put on muffs on it and to my surprize it fired up straight away idling perfectly smooth . but it got hot after some time for my feeling - it reached 175 deg fahrenheit , is it normal ?

another questions :

-where is the impeller on this engine / bravo three drive ? volvo style inside or in the drive ?
-what is the gearlube capacity of a bravo3 ? when changing it - is it like in the sx drive to fill by pump from the bottom until the lube comes out on the top hole ?
-what is the oil capacity of the 5.0 MPI ?
-can i find somewhere a manual online for the engine ?

please help some mercruiser greenhorn ...

Sea water pump runs directly off the engine

2.70 (+-) quarts of High Performance Mercury/Quicksilver gear lube

6-7 quarts on the 5.0

I think it is a Bravo service manual #28, if I recall. Google for a downloadable PDF of it.

The impeller is on the engine, lower left corner when viewed from the front of the engine. The boat has been sitting for quite some time so change it. Your temp should run around 170.
Yes, you pump the gear lube from the bottom until it comes out the vent hole. Then you put the vent plug in and continue pumping until you get oil rising in your gear lube monitor (top right of engine). Then top off the monitor bottle.
Oil capacity for 5.0 is 5 quarts I believe, but it doesn't matter, always use the dipstick to check the level because chances are you will never get all the oil out when you change it anyway.

Also, this being your first Bravo 3 drive, make sure you use the correct anodes. magnesium for fresh or aluminum in salt, especially if the boat will be sitting in the water for any length of time.

thanks much gents !

i,m now in the process of a full servicing of the boat, replaced engine oil, tstat plugs and the impeller, tomorrow i will change gearoil.

especially the impeller is a serious pain in the *** since i learned my boat features a fuel cooling system which in a wonderful way blocks off any entrance to the pump respective the attached hoses - but i made it to pull the impeller pump !
