5.0 Mercruiser will turn over but won't start

From the beginning: turned key, no gauges, nothing. Pushed on fuse panel, got gauges and engine will turn over, release push on fuse panel, engine will crank. Launched boat, now won't start, but will turn over. Tried carburetor cleaner- will start until that burns. Don't smell fuel like you would after multiple attempts. Just purchased from individual this week- of course test drive went perfectly. Any ideas?

not much to go on but sounds like lack of fuel .got a engine serial number? carb, efi, tbi
