5.0 Merc Runs Great. After 30 Mins Stops!! Help

i have a 2000 bayliner 2050 capri with a 5.0 mercruiser 2 bbl. i have had this problem now for about 2 weeks and i keep trying different things and still have had no luck. For the list of things already done: first thing tried was fuel filter/separator and inline fuel filter in carb. ran it and still same problem, next was the coil. still same thing. 2 days ago i put a new distributor pickup sensor in. seemed to help a little bit it ran longer but than same problem when it heated up. so now im thinking electric fuel pump... when i looked in the carb i could see the streams of fuel while pumping throttle. than it acted like it wanted to start than stopped again. after letting boat sit for about an hour it ran fine again. any help and suggestions would be great because i do not have tons of money to spend on the boat or i would just let someone else deal with it. Thanks!!

If you get a stream of fuel when you move the accelerator, IMEDIATELY after it dies,
chances are that it isn't a fuel problem but an ignition problem. Might try to hook up test light to the + side of the coil. If it dies and the light stays on you know that the power to the coil is good.

Does it restart after it cools down ? On some models the coil is fed by the alternator .

chances are that it isn't a fuel problem but an ignition problem. Might try to hook up test light to the + side of the coil. If it dies and the light stays on you know that the power to the coil is good.

yeah and thats what i was thinking too. but the last time i had it out and it died, it kinda started, burned off gas from accelorator, and than died again like it was starving for more fuel to keep it running. but thanks i will try that. the only problem is i have to take it out in order for it to heat up enough to where it dies on me, cant get it to do that in driveway without a load.

im not sure if its vapor lock or not, i guess next time i go out and it happens after 30 mins or so i will open the line up at the carb. i just cant get this problem to happen in my driveway without a load. thanks

Buy a cheap guage, install in at the carb. and stop guessing if you have a fuel delivery problem.

definetly a good idea, i had thought about it before but was hesitant because i would have to change fuel line. but it would definetly rule it out.

yes it does restart when it cools down and runs as it should. i will check the positive side of the coil next time this happens and see if i have power or not

what sort of gauge do you mean buddy - what does it measure/demonstrate?
