Engine is a 5.0GXi-G, FI, 2007 model

My temp gage isn't working, but when I short it at the gage, the needle flips full scale. That to me means it's the sending unit or wiring to sending unit.

I bought a new sending unit with a one wire connection, however for the life of me I cannot locate that thing on my block. Here's what I found: A. ECM sensor(switch) on t'stat housing,2 wire conn, B. MAP/MAT sensor, 4 wire connector near rear of manifold, . C. A knock sensor on each side of block down low about in center. I've found the high temp sensors on the exh elbows, but these are safety's. I think it's a tan, one wire connection tothe sending unit.

I've also looked on http://www.volvopentastore.com/Inta...*****.627209542--store_id.366--view_id.320771, but cannot locate sensor.

A diagram would be GREAT!

The boat is about 150 mi away, but I'm going up soon to look again.

Sorry man, don't have a diagram for ya, but you need to get that boat closer to where you live. My temp sender has one wire connected to it and it is very close to thermostat housing; kind of hidden by the cooling tubes. Good luck

Thanks family guy, I'll look closer, that thing has to be somewhere.

We live and boat around Chesapeake Bay fall, spring and take the boat to Lake Gaston (fresh water) for the summer. We usually have it home by now, and plan to pull it back trip.

I'll let you know.

Beautiful area around there. I used to live on Andrews AFB.

A couple other things:
Just cause your temp gauge tips full scale when you short it doesn't automatically mean your sender is bad.

Before I replaced my temp sender I pulled it and attached it to an ohmmeter and suspended the sensing end of the sender in a pot of oil I heated up on the stove. I then took resistance readings at 100 F, 160 F, and 220 F.

This is how you tell if your gauge or your sender is bad. If your sender is correctly registering resistance at the specified temperatures (identified in your workshop manual) then it means your gauge is incorrectly displaying temperature based on the correct resistance sent from the sender, which means your gauge is bad.

If the resistance readings aren't matching up appropriately at the specified temps during temp sender testing your gauge is probably okay and you may just need to replace your sender.

Kind of need to test the sender to know which to replace.

Wiring itself is rarely the issue in electrical problems. Connections and components are the likely culprits.

Re: 5.0 GXi-G temp sender location

Thanks for all the info on testing the sender and gauge.

Well, I have my boat home now, but the plot thickens. I found a place on the intake manifold where I thought it would be (based on what familyguy said) and also verified that location with a local marina, but when I looked, there was a plug screwed in there!

It's still a mystery. Next stop is to take it to a shop and hopefully they will show me where to find it.

Re: 5.0 GXi-G temp sender location

Temp sender solved! The reason I couldn't find a traditional screw in type temp sender is this engine (2007 5.0GXI-G) does not have one!!! It is sensed by the ECM and transmitted to the gage. The ECM was faulty, had to be replaced, $2100, but thankfully it was under warranty. If it was out of warranty, a sensor compatible with the gage could be screwed into the intake manifold (remove existing blank plug), run a wire run from the sensor to the wiring harness (near the ECU) and spliced into the wire going to the gage.
