Hi all, I am thinking of purchasing a 1999 seaswirl 2600 walkaround boat. The boat has a 5.0 GL volvo penta motor in it, I am looking for any information on that type motor if there were any problems with them. I think it is a carburated fuel system so I am concerned about cold starts. I do not know the horsepower rating on them. When I saw the motor it looked like the top of the risers were rusted and also the waterpump. The owner claims there is only 75 hrs on the motor, I find this hard to believe since there is know hour meter to prove this. Other than the rusting the motor looks pretty clean, and she started right up.I think it is raw water cooled,so I am wondering if I can install some kind of fresh water flush kit when I dock the boat at the end of the day. Thanks JOE

Re: 5.0 GL volvo penta

The 5.0 is a good little motor but in a 26 footer it's simply not enough. You should be able to find something with no doubt about how many hours it has and with a closed cooling system if that's what you want.
I would prefer a big block for any boat over 25 feet, but a 5.7 is okay. Don't buy without a test drive, you may be happy with the 5.0, you might not.

It's the job of the seller to embellish. Spend a few dollars and get a survey. The surveyer will check it over and give you an honest appraisal on the entire boat, not just the motor.

The 5.0L is made by GM, it is the same motor that merc use also. VP & Merc just bolt on their own accessories.

weirdwalt, thanks for the reply, this is the first I heard that a 5.0 is not enough motor for a 26 footer. Why would seaswirl offer it.Do you know what the horsepower is for the 5.0GL

Re: 5.0 GL volvo penta

The Hp rating for the GL is 220hp. Is that a single prop drive or a DP? The DP would help a lot.
Since it's only a 5.0L engine, I would guess the boat is very light weight, and as long as it stays light, the engine will not be a problem.
You usually see the end of the 5.0L engines in the 22 to 24 foot range.

LOW priced "Boat Show Specials" is where you normally find a lot of 5.0L engines being sold.

Re: 5.0 GL volvo penta

Thanks for the reply guys. Don, the boat is a single prop and weighs approximately 4775 lbs. I am not looking for a speed boat but something that would be economical to run with today's gas prices but would get me out of harms way also.

A small engine isn't necessarily the most economical on boats. They take longer to get on step at WOT, and you need more throttle in a 5.0 than in a 5.7 to maintain the same rpm. The 5.0 may have to have the secondaries open on a 4bbl carb, where on a 5.7 the secondaries may not be needed.

Hi Dockside,
I dont know where you keep your boat,or where you live geographicly, and this most likely wont help you. But it sounds like you sail in salt water. What i do to flush out my engine is I purposely keep my boat at a slip on the Ct.River about 2 miles from the mouth of Long Island Sound. That way at the end of the day I can run up the river, and flush out the engine with fresh water from the river.
Also remember that not everyone in the world is that honest. This guy wants to sell his boat, and would probably tell you anything you wanted to hear to do that.
