Looking for some advice,

I have 2004 Stracraft Aurora 2210 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-D (carburated). Other than a bad thermostat, this is the first problem I've had with the motor. I've had this problem the last two times I used the boat. The first time it happended I was running the boat at about 4500 RPM when I started hearing lifter noise, and also noticed a slight power degregation and what seemed to be a miss (not running on all cylendars. When I brought it back to idel, it ran abit rough and had a predominent lifter noise. Shut it down and restarted a couple times but still had the problem. Started it again and let it idle for a few minutes and the noise went away and it ran great. Powered back to the marina at 3500 RPM's with no problems. Changed the oil/filter and looked for metal - none. Same problem happended the next time I used it with the same details, except it started as soon as I hit 400 RPM's.

I'm thinking I may have a bad hydraulic lifter that can't keep up at high RPM's. Thought about changing the lifters myslef, but would hate to spend the money to change all the lifters if that's not the problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I meant to say it started this last time as soon as it hit 4000 RPM's...sorry.

Ayuh,... Where was the oil Level when this is happenin',..??

I kinda doubt just changin' the lifters will fix anything...

Oil was full - perhaps an 1/8" on the dipstick above full.

Ayuh,... Over-full is worse than being at the add mark...

The crankshaft can beat the oil to a froth, 'n cause a loss of oil pressure, as it's full of Air...

Sounds like the oil level is over full.

The crankshaft hits the oil and aerates it, the aerated oil will not hold the lifters solid and they rattle.

I can't say for certain, but I think the first time it happended, the oil was right at the full mark. After the first event I changed the oil and filter and that's when it got slightly above full. In any case, I'll remove some oil to bring the level back to the add/full mark and give that a try.

Would I see fluctuations in the oil pressure if this is the problem?

Thanks for your feedback!

I doubt it'll show on the gauge...

I know this is an old thread, but can you tell me if lowering your oil to the correct level fixed your issue?

Thanks,
Rick

Please don't drag old threads out of the boneyard, he's not going to answer, he hasn't returned to the forums since Oct 2011.
If your oil is over full, take some out and try it. Doesn't matter if it cured his problem or not.
