Do these 9.8 and 9.9 motors share any parts or are they completely different motors?

Some of the Mercs came with a slightly different shifter. Some also have the EU version carb with accelerator pump. Otherwise, they are identical.

Sorry... I should have worded the question better.

I'm interested in the difference between the 9.8 and 9.9. I realize the the brands are all built by Tohatsu and share most of the parts. I'm familiar with the 4S 9.9 but know virtually nothing about the 9.8. How does it fit into the picture? Is it a bigger version of the 8 HP motors or for some reason a slightly smaller version of the 9.9? Was it always available along with the 9.9/15/18/20?

Merc calls the carbed Tohatsu 9.8 a Merc 9.9. Yes in the Tohatsu lineup of carbed motors, the light weight 8/9.8A/B coexisted with the heavier 9.9/15/18B. The 20C is bigger. The MFS8A/B just has a smaller carb than the 9.8. Likewise, the 9.9/15/18B motors all run different carbs, plus the 18 has a higher lift cam, NLA. The new EFI 9.9/15/20 are a completely different animal, and share their own block, but run different ECUs.
