had a problem yesterday with my 09 4hp four stroke nissan. started right off but shut down after approx 1 min. i have fresh fuel in both the external and internal tanks. got it running again but would only run at 1/2 throttle and only on the external tank. switched over to the internal and is sputtered and quit ran it a couple days last wk with no problem. i did however dump the old fuel out of the internal tank and had to turn the motor upside down to do it. any help here will be appreciated

Re: 4hp nissan running problem

Sounds like varnish buildup in the carburetor due to the fuel not being drained out of the carb after use.

Inverting a 4-stroke can do weird things. Check oil level, and check plug.

If you want to use the onboard tank, make sure it's reasonably full for a cold start, as gravity alone pushes the fuel to the pump -- there's no primer bulb for the onboard tank to push the fuel past the pump to the carb, which is just slightly below the tank. If the tank is low, odds are fuel may not get to the carb by gravity alone -- in other words, you will need to pull a few times for the pump to deliver fuel to the carb before it will start.

Always run the carb dry at the end of each and every day. If there is carb varnishing, as evidenced by a too-lean condition, remove the carb, disassemble it fully, clean in real carb dip, and reassemble, paying attention to float height.
