4hp mercury 1976

how do i tell if my merc is pumping water. i have ran it in a barrel of water, and see just some water sperting out of the holes on the back side of the lower unit above the cavatation plate. my manual sayes it should have a forward and reverse, only has f & n. could this be because it was made in belgium?

Thats because you have a 2 cyl. 4hp gnat not a 1 cyl 4hp merc with full shift

How much water should come out of the 8 outlets on the back of the lower unit.

They only spit a little along with exhaust gases

Well there ya go ... I guess thats what my 4hp is too a gnat? mine is a 2 cyl and only has fwd and neutral. So the yanke ones are only a single cylinder? <br />Mine is no doubt a merc though, I have had her open and she is without a doubt a merc <br />Jon
