I have an old push mower that runs and mows fine. After a short spell of mowing, the thing will start a horrendous squealing noise and partially eject the pull rope.
I shut it off, give the rope a couple of short pulls to get the rope to go back in, then restart and mow for a while. Then it starts all over. This is progressively getting worse.
What do ya think is causing this?
I removed the rope and spring assembly and all looks ok other than really dirty. Does it just need a good cleaning, or need to be replaced? Or is this even the problem?
Anyone had this happen?
I cleaned it all up with brake parts cleaner, and think I may re-assemble. Does any kind of grease or lube go on the spring?

Oil the bearing in the recoil housing on top of the flywheel by removing the engine cover, remover the little screen. The cover to the bearings is held in place by a 5/16 screw. Make sure not to over oil. WD40 works best. Just a little squirt.

Sorry Nate, you lost me...!!!
I removed engine cover and little screen. What I think is the bearing housing looks to be pressed on, there is no 5/16 screw? Sticking up out of this bearing housing is the shaft the rope and spring assembly sit on, correct? Am I in the right spot?

Yes it should be square in shape and sits right on the fly wheel and about 1-2 inches tall. They where not pressed on as far as I remember, but inside that there is 6 or 7 bearings. These get rust on them, and they come out of their little groove.

Thanks Nate!
I'll get a puller and replace the bearing assembly, as the unit looks sealed.

Do you have a serial number or model number off the motor?

WD40 is great for cleaning, but is a sorry lubricant. Use something else for lubricating.

-dd-

I use synthetic moter oil on mine. There is a small hole in the center of the "square" piece with a felt behind it. (at least on mine) If its a vertical shaft its easy.

Just spray the heck out of it with WD-40 or remove the rope and soak the whole thing in kerosene or diesel fuel. If you use oil use very light oil or it may gum up after awhile from all the dirt that gets sucked in from the flywheel. If this doesn't work then most likely the balls are worn to far and will need replacing.

It's best to just replace the whole clutch. They're cheap. WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. It is for displacing water, that's it. (WD = Water Displacement) You are supposed to lube the shaft by using a DROP of motor oil on the recess at the end of the crankshaft. Look at jackssmallengines.com for a new clutch.

Re: 4HP Briggs & Stratton, deafining squeal!!!

Thanks everyone. I finally figured out that the clutch assembly unscrews from the flywheel. Then, I figured out that this is not a sealed unit. I lifted the cover and observed some dirt etc... the ball bearings look great. I've cleaned it all up and fixin to re-assemble.
Thanks again!!!
