48 SPL Lower Unit

I have a 1995 48Hp SPL Evinrude. It had sat up for several years and I have had it running for 4 or 5 months now and it's been running great. But coming in from fishing Saturday afternoon it started tapping. I was still a way from being in and it didn't sound too terrible so I kept running though not wide open. After 4 or 5 minutes the engine lurched and jostled so bad we were nearly throw from the boat. It started back up right away, but when I put it in gear it would barely go and it was rough. After a minute or two of this (I had to try to get back in as it was about to get dark) it quit pushing altogether.

I assume the problem is in the lower unit and I would hate to replace the entire lower unit due to the cost of a new or even used one. But there is also a time factor involved as our annual redfish tournament is in two weeks, so I need to get it fixed quickly. I will go back to my camp this wekend to try to find the broken part(s), but it would help if someone here had an idea of what it was beforehand so I knew exactly where to start.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm... doesn't sound good. You probably need to open up the LU to see what happened. I'm replying to bump this up so that maybe a wiser person on this engine will have a better answer :)
