48 SPCL Evinrude Starter Issue ??

Hello, first and foremost I'm new to this thread so I apologize for jumping in.

Anyhow, I have a 48 evinrude and ran into a situation this weekend which I think may be starter related. After applying the choke and attempting to start (which it was turning) I lowered the choke and attempted to start again (it usually likes to start without the choke once a start has been attempted) but nothing. I took off the cover and turned the key and the starter did spin but the gear on top of the starter wouldn't move up to engage the gear that would allow it to try and turnover. If the gear was manually placed into position, the starter didn't have enough energy to make it spin. First thought was a weak battery so I replaced and the same results. Jumped the new barrery directly to the starter with same results. Jumped both batteries together and tried directly to the starter with same results. Tried it at the celinoid with same. So would it seem that the started is bad here? It does spin but doesn't spin quick enough to make it engage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to iboats. are you from the Sunshine State? not necessarily!!
90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Yes I am from the Sunshine State (WPB). Thanks for the response. I have tried all that you mentioned so I assume by what you are saying my next step would be the starter replacement. Does anybody know what starter I would need as my boat is out at lake okeechobee which is a little more than an hour away and I would like to take a new one out next time I go. Thanks again for the help.
