i have a 1990 48 hp that has a tight piston on the lift assembly. this has been like this for the since i bought the motor in 1992. the motor was left in the upright position and now it is locked up. can the piston assembly be rebuilt or will it have to be replaced??? is there something aftermarket i can purchase to replace this with???

Tnimm, if it is the gas-assisted manual lift.... you can try to lift the valve with a screwdriver. Unscrew the big plastic nut for that. In my case it turned out the cable was rotten and the cilinder was just fine. Waiting ages for the cable now...<br />Frank

tnimmortal, those assemblies are replace only as I understand it. I don't know of anyone that rebuilds them. Hopefully you have the problem Frank mentioned. Mine turned out to be the cable also. The weak point of the gas-assisted lift is the cable. The cable sells for around $55-60.

well my cable broke when i tried to let it down. i had no luck in getting it to release though when i took the cable completely off the motor.does the part the cable attaches to on the piston assembly need to be pulled out to release?and in to lock?

tnimmortal, yes. If you take a flat bladed screwdriver and "gently" lift up on that part where the cable attaches you will effect a release of pressure allowing the engine to come on down. Remember.... as you pry up on it.... don't let it come all the way down or you will block your access to the assembly when you want to hook up your new cable. Let me know if this is clear..... of course I think it is.... ha. :D

well i took a screwdriver and bleeded the pressure off. could the cable have been stretched for 10+ years? the cable didnt break but the plastic part that screws on the cable and attaches to the lever on the motor did .the motor is on a pontoon now so the she lift is no major deal but i may trade for a boat in a year or so and am planning on keeping the motor.

That plastic part is available separately and is called a "shell connector" from Evinrude. It is threaded and is easily replaced. Maybe $4? I doubt the cable stretched, but the plastic part just got brittle with age.

That little black plastic thingy that broke is a common thing and can be replaced. Lots' cheaper than a new tilt assist cylinder. See your local John/Rude dealer for a replacement shell.....that's what that little do-hickey is called. PN 334153.
