470 voltage regulator

Long story short, bought a boat, guy tells me boat died on him in lake, wouldnt restart....
failed to tell mention the voltage regulator filled boat with white choking smoke..... asshole

I put a new electric ignitor and coil because points were original 1980 and tarnished, thinking thats why it died.

question is, Why does everyone spend 300-500 on a alternator set up instead of switching to a newer style voltage regulator made to handle the load? Its 4 wires that i can see, it just transfers 18v charge to 12v battery to charge battery.
seriously, why cant i use one out of a motorcycle or newer mercruiser thats stator charged and not water cooled??? Theyre 20x smaller and 100x more advanced than this 1970s technology.

I can feel your pain. The problem is these engines went out of production many years ago. When they were current the alternator kits were around$100.00 and I installed a few of them. The magnets were also known to come loose in the balancer and tear up the stator . I do not recall the prices but the regulator was real expensive at the time and the customer went into “sticker shock” when I would tell them what it would cost.
If that engine would have been designed with an outside water pump and stabilized cylinders it would have had a longer production run.

I've seen 40 amp units for under $30.

I read like 20 threads about this and seems like everyone just wants to reinvent the wheel.

this is like 100 year old technology that hadn't been improved until like the late 80s early 90s after this motor stopped being used lol

it reminds me of a old Chevy 350 vs a Chevy ls

It's because it's a boat. You don't go experimenting with explosion potential in a boat. People end up dead and lawyers get involved and nothing good happens... That's why we have the 'it's working the way it was designed, leave well enough alone!' attitudes.
