i have a 1979 sport-craft with a nightmare 470 in it. i have a friend with a boat that has bad stringers and a 5 foot gash down the middle of it. it has a mercruiser 165 in it. the out drives are the same inside and out. will i be able to pull the 470 and bolt the 165 up to it with out to much hassle?

Re: 470 to in line 6 swap

If I remember correctly, the gear ratios in the upper outdrives are different due to the torque curves of the two motors.

I did this same swap. No real problems. My manual has wiring diagrams and most of the colors are the same. I did have to use the exhaust pipe that mounts to the transom plate from the 165. In my case it was a little different than the 470. It might also be a good time to inspect and possibly replace your coupler while the engine is out. I just had to pull mine back out a couple of weeks ago and do this. It did last 2 seasons before crapping out though. Paid $120 for new one, wish I had known when I did the swap. http://www.amarket.com/merccoup.htm
