Does anyone out there know if the shift interrupt and reverse lockout switches from a 470 will work on the 165?

If not, I'm sure with a bit of engineering know-how and fabrication it can be made to work

Fab and engineering not an issue since i hope to use the 470 inner transom plate , just wondering about compatibility of electrical components.

The flywheel cover from the 470 will bolt up to the 6 cylinder. Of course the front mount will have to be for the 6. The shift control plate with the interrupter will work. The 470 engine harness can also be used with some work. How much running gear does the 6 already have? What year 470 are you replacing?

I have both drive setups pulley to prop. The 165 is a 72 and the 470 is a 78. The problem with the 165 plate and some of the grar is the 165 was a saltwater motor and has significant corrosion.

For those years, the inner plate and the gimbal housing are the same. Also all the trim system... As you have both drives, you will notice the 165 drive is a 1.65:1 and the 470 is 1.84:1... they are interchangeable, with a prop change. If the boat is on the larger end of the scale, consider running the 1.84:1 with the 165... You'll need a higher pitch prop, but the advantage of that is the higher pitch props are a little more efficient. However, the engine flywheel covers are VERY VERY different.

Yes, fortunately all parts forward of the transom plate are good, the transom plate and gimbal ring are a mess.

The 470 is the later of the MC-1 transom assemblies, but it makes little difference. If you plan on putting the 165 into the boat that currently has the 470, just pull the drive, pull the 470 engine out, swap the exhaust pipes over, drop the 165 engine in (complete), it should even line up to the same holes for the front mounting.

The inner plates may be slightly different. You should be able to use the 470 plate with the 165 engine. Can't remember if there's a difference in the mounting of the shift plate. If there's is, they are interchangeable.

Boat is the process of a complete gut and rebuild so it's a blank slate. In trying to get away from the many issues with the 470 I got agood deal on the 165 drivetrain. I'm now in the process of a rebuild on the 6.Just trying to sort out which pieces to use in the reassembly.

Use the old 470 gimbal housing and inner transom plates, and all the trim gear from the 470. Use the exhaust pipe from the 165... Build up the 6 and drop it in....

If the 6 does not need to be re bored it will be a good idea to replace the pistons. Those engines are known to develop a piston slap from either a cracked skirt or a wrist pin problem. You do not want to find that out after installing it in the boat. Since you probably do not know the engine’s history. Did the 6 come with the drive coupler and the wire harness, if so check that the harness plug is the same that the 470 used. Be sure to replace the bushing in the block above the oil pump otherwise you will end up with a sloppy dwell reading because there is no bushing in the bottom of the distributor. It is easy to install a bushing in the bottom of the distributor by taking it to a machine shop. If you do both, that will really smooth out the engine’s overall performance.
