Finished rebuild, engine on pallet in the garauge. Filled fluids, running fuel line from gas can, battey hooked up, mech oil guage installed in line with elect sensor. Crank engine over and it just cranks. Put a little fuel down the carb and again just cranks. After a few times I did get a bang-pop from the exhaust riser, but engine won't run. Am I missing something? What would cause this? Does the fuel pump need to be primed? Cranks over fine but will not run. 170 hp 2 barrel merc carb. Firing order 1342 clockwise on the wires. New wires, points cap coil ect. Getin spark to the plugs. Could I have the distributor 180 off? 1&3 are down towards the oil pan vs up towards the valve cover. Marked and took pics before disasmebly, to make sure it went back right. I want to get it runnig prior to getting it installed in the boat.

Pull the plug for number #1 and plug the hole with your finger bring the engine to TDC on the compression side, you will fill the compression on your finger and take the cap off and see if the rotor points at the #1 plug. It dosnt matter what the orientation of the distributor body is, the only thing that matters is if the at TDC the rotor points at the #1 plug wire.

If this is a new rebuild using a new long block or if it has a new cam only run it for a few seconds. Then once installed you will need to do a cam break in. More them a few seconds before proper break in will mess the cam up.

Just FYI if you have never delt with a flat tappet cam before.

Sounds like timing to me as well. Bring cyl #1 to TDB and double check your timing at the distributor. I've made the exact same mistake before on a rebuild. Don't feel bad, I had to be towed back yesterday!
