I searched the threads for information on the 470 cooling system and well haven't found anything on it,like normal late at night and half asleep. From what I can see it's possibly a closed cooling system is this right? Having a thermostat in it would indicate it's closed and all that the raw water pump does is cool the engine cooling system and the exhaust and it also cools the regulator as well, so that's all it does and exits through the drive. But at what temp does the thermostat open and then what temp does the regulator operate at if things are running "normal"? Is it the raw water ( by way of the cooler) that cools the regulator ......?

it is closed cooling. having a radiator cap indicates that it is closed cooling (just like your car), all boats have a thermostat. Raw water is pumped from the out drive through a hose, through the regulator to the front of the exchanger, back and forth a couple of times through the tubes in the exchanger, out through the hose in the rear of the exchanger, up through the power steering cooler (if you have one) then out through the exhaust elbow. it should have a 165 degree thermostat. Normal operating temp is 165 -200 F. the regulator sees the coldest water. it is cooled By raw water flowing through a by a metal pipe imbedded in the regulator.

What type of coolant should I use in this system? Something "eco-friendly" or the ethyl-glycol ?

Anything is ok... But if you live in Cal, then use 'eco-friendly' or the ego-nazis will come after you! :D :p

The 'regulator' is not a water flow regulator, it's a voltage regulator... The output from the stator is not controllable (like a standard alternator) and so the excess voltage is dumped off as heat, by the regulator, hence the need for a serious amount of cooling...

Same as a car, about 50/50 for maximum freeze protection and efficient cooling. When you winterize in the fall all you have to do is pull the aft plug on the heat exchanger to drain out the raw water. The antifreeze stays in the block.
