Hello everyone.
The past few weeks I have been working on my Mercruiser 470. Didn’t realize it was such a fun engine until I started to read up on it. I bought the boat less then year ago and have taken it out maybe 10 times. The last time about two weeks ago I ran into the voltage regulator deal. So after reading lots of advice on here I decided to do the alternator upgrade. Along with the upgrade I went ahead and replaces the points with the petronox ignition and flamethrower coil. The boat started up beautifully after. Sounded amazagin wile running. Idle was a little high though close to maybe 900RPM. So I checked the timing and guessed it to be close to maybe 20 BTDC After adjusting it back to 6 BTDC it sounded like it wanted to shut off so I adjusted the idle on the carb. So now all seemed fine and ready to go. I also replaced the Prop With the exact same prop just one that was not beat to hell.
So today I get the boat out on the water back from the dock give it gas and it dies at about 1500RPM. So I move the boat to a area with no one around, and start to check stuff. I check timing it was still good right at 6BTDC. So I started to mess with the carb and idle to see if that would have any affect. No luck I can coast anywhere maybe 5 to 8 MPH. As soon as I give it a little gas pushing it about 1500RPM the Carb backfires then dies. This only happens under load. When not in gear I can push the throttle with no problem.
Not sure when the last rebuild on the carb was. Like I said the boat amazing up to two weeks ago then it tried to catch fire on me. I have checked all the wiring to make sure everything was set right. Im sure it is. So what would cause the boat to only do this under load?
