4,400-4,800 RPMs at WOT I believe. There are prop formulas, I unfortunately don't know them, but try searching the forums. I know I saw it here somewhere...

Your engine RPM is generally determined by the Lift and duration of the engine cam. Assuming this engine is not performance enhanced and the original cam and compression have not changed, 4400 to 4800 may be correct for WOT. However I suggest 3800 to 4200 is more appropriate for this particular engine. Anything over 3600 for long periods the thing will self-distruct.

tony

Re: 460 ford with omc outdrive

I have a pair of 460's in my boat (one is counter rotating) the manufacturer specs are 4400 - 4800 at WOT. I've actually only ever had my pair up there once at around 4600 just to see but that had me cruising along at 45 mph which was enough on a 35' 13,000lb express cruiser. Now I rarely go above 3500 rpm which puts me around 32 MPH. I have SS props that are 15 x 17. Oh yeah when I was up at 4600 RPM I swear I could see the fuel guage dropping!

Greetings!
You did not say what boat you're using your engine for. Size, weight, top speed, that all affects the prop you need.

The recommended RPM (recommended by the engine manufacturer and/or boat builder) is 4400-4800.

I have a 26' Ciera minicruiser that weighs good 4 tons loaded and I use 15x17 prop. That gets me right into the RPM range at WOT. I tried using a 15x15 prop but that caused high WOT RPM's (4900) and a significant drop in top speed (from 35mph to 25mph).

Hope this helps.
Lou
