Just picked up a 454 I was told it's a 80's block but I can't read the numbers. I need a flywheel and have no clue what one I need. How do I know if it's a cast crank or steel and what flywheel I need.

You cant read the casting numbers ??

You need an external balance flywheel for a two piece rear main, if its 80's block

steel crank will have a large parting line vs a thin line on the cranks, most visible on the throws.

Ill look for a picture. cast vs steel

EDIT... i looked an couldn't find clear pick online...

You could put some up of yours for positive id.

The casting numbers are real hard to read. I can't find any of the cranks also. I don't have a way to post pictures . I was told there is two flywheels one for a cast crank and one for a steel crank is this true.

No... there are two flywheel bolt patterns... i believe it is 1990 and earlier, then 1991 and later. The early has two piece rear mains. The late one piece rear mains. The one piece rear has a distinct aluminum seal retainer at the rear of the block.
They do however make both steel and iron flywheels in both types just like cranks. They dont care what kind of crank you bolt them to cast or forged.

This is a link for "marine" flywheels, pretty sure they are ordinary cast automotive. If you can find a new/used 14" auto/truck, it will be cheaper.

A 454 flywheel is unique because it is external balanced.
