Hi folks and thanks for looking.
I am about to reinstall my crank and went to look up the torque specs for the caps and my books are all over the place. From 95 to 80 lbs.
It is a 1986 MIE340 (mercruiser) 454ci
2 bolt mains.
Any help?

Re: 454 mains bolt torque

Now that is strange. My merc book says for the model 330 and 340 is 80 lbs
My Volvo book with Chevy section says 110lbs
A website I was just on says 110lbs for the 4 bolt mains?

Re: 454 mains bolt torque

sorry :'(

Just tightened the rear main to 110lbs and tapped on the crank to align the bearing. No turning back now.
Hey Don do you have a list of all the bolts torques?
You just made lose faith in my manuals #'s.

Don I'm amazed that you hold Clymer Manuals in higher esteem than I do.Didn't even want to use them for THAT !

DHP

might be first choice over Seloc though.

Re: 454 mains bolt torque

I checked the service bulletin index for any changed specs for your engine and didn't find any.
These are all in Ft. Lbs. except the one in Inch lbs which is noted.

Camshaft sprocket = 25
Connecting Rod Cap = 50
Crankshaft Damper = 85
Cylinder Head = 80
Ex. Manifold = 20
Flywheel = 65
Flywheel Drive Plate = 35
Intake Manifold = 30
Oil Filter Bypass Valve = 80 Inch Pounds
Oil Pump = 65
Rocker Arm Studs = 50

Merc PN for #9 Service manual = 90-14499 Hint! Hint!

DHP, last time I looked at a Clymers manual the pages were soft ....... like a phone book.

Re: 454 mains bolt torque

Thanks bud I am printing them out right now. I would be on my way to get one but there is nothing open today.
I almost want to get back to work tomorrow. I got my cam kit (cam, lifters, timing chain and some rod bolts also) for the motor on Fri night. The only issue.......only 12 lifters and no cam! And you guessed it, they will not reopen until tomorrow.

f-in.......if the rod bolts you bought are aftermarket the rod bolt torque specs Don posted may not apply. Be sure to read the packaging closely.
