when this motor is cold it starts very hard must crank for along time. when it does start black smoke rolls out the exhaust, hunts and rolls when its warmed up runs fine any help thanks
Is this a Mercruiser or ???.... What model year ????... Some more info might help.. <br /><br />Are you opening up the throttle or "pumping it" as your trying to start it? If so, that's a no-no which would cause the difficult starting and black smoke you describe..<br /><br />It should cold start with the throttle in the neutral position or with the throttle just barely (and I do mean barely) cracked open..<br /><br />Other problems could be that the base timing is not set to the correct spec. .. Old dirty fuel or fuel filter is another...
Sadie.. You need to have a Volvo dealers service department have look at your engine so they can check the EFI system with a code scan tool so they can check for trouble codes.. A Mercruiser service dept. may also be able to help you, as I believe their efi system is the same as all GM based engines..<br /><br />A few of the possible culprits for you problem are... <br /><br />#1 faulty/coroded connection somewhere in the wiring harness..<br />#2 Bad engine coolant temperature sensor.. (my guess)<br />#3 Bad manifold absolute pressure sensor, or a poor vaccum signal to the sensor which may be caused by a loose or punctured vacuum hose leaking between the throttle body and the sensor...<br /> <br /><br />Here's a link to a site that has some inexpensive code scanners for "do it your selfers".. You may want to contact them to find out if the "CodeMate EFI Code reader #94008" will be compatable with your 2001 Volvo...<br /><br /> http://216.230.203.183/marine/marine.htm
Battery voltage on these EFI units is critical. If you have a battery that is on it's way out or does'nt meet the hefty standards this engine requires, you can expect the symptoms you are having.Have the batteries charged and checked.
I got the EFI scan tool from Rinda. It works fine and its easy to use. You gotta have this tools if you plan to maintain the engine yourself. Make sure your fuel pressure at the low and high pressure points is up to speed. Also check the return line to the vapor separator for blockage. Also the vacum line from the separtor to the TBI. If the seal at the separator tank isleaking it might be venting fuel into the TBI and making it too rich at idle. Call Volvo tech support at 757-436-2800 (talk to Lyon). He can fax you the entire troubleshooting guide for the TBI fuel pressure checks. Good luck.
Thanks for the info I have 2 new batteries, checked them ,they check ok,also checked alt.output ok.I will call Volvo monday and see if I can talk to Lyon. Thanks again for the help
