Noticed oil leaking from inside lower unit housing after using newly purchased used outboard. I have removed all leading up to bearing carrier which looks to be threaded like the claw washer i removed. The thing i need help with is how to you get this bearing carrier which has a key and groove system which holds this bearing carrier in place. I can't get at this simple key from the rear and push out. I'm also not able to find a manual Amazon no luck. I do believe i will be OK if I can get this moving toward replacing all my seals. It was probably a result of fishing line that the previous owner had gotten drawn in and around the prop hub and lower unit assembly.
Serial Number - 06554168
Model Number - 1997 40FLPTO

Thank you!

If you've taken the hub nut out you may need a slide hammer to remove the bearing carrier. The key you're looking at is just in there to keep the carrier from spinning. Be careful once you get it out as there may be shims that need to go back in exactly like they were. Try this place for a manual. http://www.crowleymarine.com

Re: 40hp Tracker/Merc Prop Shaft Removal

Thanks to all, I got my Clymer manual B723 1994-1997. I replaced both oil seals at the prop side of the carrier and the O-ring at the other. Lub 2-4-c and Loctite 271 in all the correct places. I am most certain that i had the gear in neutral when i removed the shaft. However when i put it back in i had no reverse or forward gear. So i removed it and found i had the shift cam follower in the correct direction so that wasn't it. I read that you should have it in forward when putting it back together and I believe i understand why. It should give you clearance that you wouldn't have if in anyother gear, right? I am using AmsOil and that's why i'm hear. I changed to AmsOil when i got this boat thinking i wanted to protect it better and it started to leak from behind the first two oil seals "O-ring", but it is still leaking a little after running on the hose for a few minutes and sitting all night. From the same place i think "O-ring". The carrier bearing rails look fine and i cleaned the small pieces of corrosion from the lower unit housing so that shouldn't be the issue compromising the O-ring?? I'm thinking that since i don't have the tool for the "retaining ring" i might not be securing the retaining ring enough to properly seat the carrier all the way forward and that might explain my shift issue. Since i did nothing but take out the prop shaft, no lower unit drop or pinion nut removal. I don't really want to take this to someone since i have done all this up to now. I appreciate your posts!

If you have no tool to re-install the retaner ring, how did you get it out?

To remove bearing carrier retainer ring without spline tool. All you do is chip it out by hitting it with and edge at a slight angle to avoid messing up those threads it uses. Once you get enough of it out or cracked it just pops out with some needle nose plyers. However you will need that tool to apply the correct torks I believe around 95lbs to fully seat that ring pushing the O-ring forward enough to correctly seal the oil from the water. If you don't get it right you will see brown milky oil after flushing or running the motor. No way to tap that retainer ring without damaging it without the tool which cost about $100, Mercruiser Bearing Carrier Retainer Wrench 91-91947.
