I have a 2002 model 40hp mercury outboard that I am wanting to upgrade to a 60hp carburetor. But nobody in my area is willing to do it. I would like to try and do it myself, but do not know what is involved in the process or even what carb to buy and where to get it. Is there a website I go visit that would explain everything involved in this upgrade?

you might find this expensive. The difference in specs. are the carbs. and also the 40/50 ran a 2:1 gear ratio box The 55/60 ran a 1.64:1 box. Not sure if Carb only require jet changes or compleate change and olso if there is a restrictive plate in the exhaust or not? Quite Truthfully it will cost you less to just buy a 60 even if you did it yourself and used s/hand parts

I believe the 40/50 HP versions ran a 1.83:1 gear set.

Mercury Parts Express on their web site will allow you to view parts lists for all three engines. It will require considerable time on your part to determine if exhaust, pistons, blocks, carbs, manifolds, jetting, heads, are or are not the same. If part numbers are the same no change of that part is required. If they are not the same, you need to go with the 60HP part. You then need to determine if anything related to that part is also affected. Even though the engines have the same displacement (CC) they may be ported differently. Pistons may be different as may all of the other parts I mentioned.

Agreed. You need to place the parts list of your existing engine side by side with the parts list of the one you wanna "create".

BEWARE: If the blocks are different part numbers, that could mean a porting difference, in which case you could change all the parts in the world and still be fuxxored in the HP dept.

-W
