Couldn't you replace it for just a little more.I see here at iboats they are selling low hours 2009 4 stroke Yamaha 40s for $4,100.

Bear in mind an easy rebuild can turn into a nightmare. Personally I feel a new short block is the best route to go. (Well, really new engine would be better if affordable) Lot's of pro's and con to consider.

Best of luck

Re: 40hp rebuild

If you mechanically inclined you can rebuild it cheaper than $1700, I looked thru catalogue and new pistons, all bearings, gasket set & seals, impeller and new VRO/OMS pump will only run around $800. If it need boring add about $100 to price plus $65 for service manual. So the most you should spend is $1000 if you do it yourself unless crank is bad. I would remove it and tear it down to see exactly what it needs as you may can get out cheaper if it only needs one cylinder repaired.
