40hp nissan starter problems

have a 2003 nissan 40 hp with carbs.problems is the starter
( replaced last year)some times the starter gear does not come back all the way back down,then i have a clicking noise,thought at first it was a bad connection,cleaned all cables,same thing,checked old starter with a battery charger and vit worked fine,could it be the starter solenoid not providing enough juice to operate the starter?Thanks for any and all advice.Steve

Is the starter an aftermarket or rebuilt or is it a new one from a Nissan or Tohatsu dealer? It's not the solenoid.

it is an aftermarket,could it be the key switch?What is strange is the original starter works when I hook it up to a battery charger,the clicking was the reason I replaced it in the 1st place,also the marine battery is new.Thanks

Probably the aftermarket starter. Cheap crap my friend.

Thanks,the original starter is Hitachi,will be going back to that,though the arco 3412 looks like a okay starter,will stick with what it came with.
