40hp Mercury starts then dies

I have a 2000 40hp merc 2 stroke. sometimes i cant get it to start and sometimes it starts and dies only after a few seconds of running It will start right back up and run for a few more seconds. i can do this over and over. I have the hose hooked up to it now and its starting then dieing over and over. can somone please give me some advice on what the problem may be.

fuel problem, try pumping the fuel hose a bit when it runs.

Have you tried the choke?

I have the exact same problem. So far I have found this.

If I disconnect the br/yl wire at the engine which disconnects the ground from the ignition (not sure exaclty what gets grounded out to stop the spark) it runs steady. If I connect the wire back up it starts then stops right away.

Now I just have to trace the wire back and find where it is shorting to ground.
