40hp merc just quit

while fishing with my 1977 merc 402 it has always done everything 100% but it just turned off while crossing lake. Have no spark. like a few sugestions.

Otis,

I'm going to assume you have no spark at either plug. If not, you should check the stator/trigger. Make sure that you are getting a good triggers down from the stator. There should be wires coming down from it to your switch pack. I disconnected mine and stuck a meter (using AC scale) and pulled the rope (or starter) and you should see some movement on your meter. (this is a rudimentary test, but most people have access to a multimeter) If you are getting triggers, look at your switch pack. There really isn't much of test for that. You just have to choose it by elimination. I'm sure you have dual coils. Not much chance both went out. You could check the ground wire from the power pack, but I'd certainly check the stator/trigger.
