I just bought a 40hp mariner, and i am not sure of the year. It has electric start, plus pull start, power tilt and trim. The numbers that i got off the nameplate are: 503421, 6E9, & 40EL10. Tried to turn the flywheel by hand and it doesnlt spin. The pullstart will pull all the way out freely when its in nuetral, but when i put it in gear, it will not pull out at all. This motor sat for about 3 years, so i need to go through it but it is very clean. Before it was put away, it ran great. Was stored inside. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!

Sounds like the low end is seized.

Can you turn the prop while it is in neutral?

Place engine in neutral, remove the spark plugs and try to turn the flywheel over by hand. If it will not turn over the motor is seized.

You could try spraying some WD-40 into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and let it sit over night. However, if seized now it might need to be pulled apart and rehoned + new rings.
