40hp Lower Unit

I have a friend who blew out his lower unit. The motor is a 1987 Johnson 40hp. Can someone tell me what other lower units might be interchangeable with this motor? Will a 50hp unit work? And what year models/ranges?<br /><br />Thanks<br />Bryant

Most 40 or 50 hp gearcases from 1981 to 1988 models should fit, EXCEPT:<br /><br />-Watch out for different diameter and/or spline configurations that may be around from a "commercial" model motor<br />-or anything older than 1981.<br /><br />These (above 2 exceptions) may work, but verify before purchasing.<br /><br />1989 and newer gearcases have a different driveshaft and won't fit the crankshaft on the older engine.<br /><br />-John
